TDK SA - 1992 & 1995 - EU

"The TDK SA has been the benchmark for Type II cassettes for many years and was the cassette that deck manufacturers used to calibrate their decks with. No need for biasing, these just sound wonderful in any well maintained deck. Although earlier versions look better and have better shells, we feel this has the best actual tape of any SA in it. Developed when cassette was still the major home recording format, these had to be good. As time went on, the Super Avilyn particles got smaller and peaked with this cassette, which is still 100% TDK." Tony Villa

Note 1: 50 minutes: 1992:
Lightly scuffed wrapper. The wrapper has a tear on the reverse side (Top left corner). The case appears to have a small crack, also in the same corner, but it does not appear that the case has to be replaced. There is one other tiny tear. See 4 pictures. Only 1 available
Note 2: 50 minutes: 1995:
Lightly scuffed wrapper, nearly box-fresh. The wrapper has a split on the reverse side. There is no visible crack anywhere. Only 1 available
Note 3: 90 minutes: 1995:  Out of Stock

Collector's Corner:
I currently have these listed as "assembled in Luxembourg". If you’ve come across solid information pointing elsewhere (Germany?), I’d genuinely appreciate hearing from you. Accurate provenance helps all of us document these tapes more clearly. Thank you.

About TDK:

TDK’s origins trace back to 1935, when the Tokyo Denki Kagaku Kogyo company was founded to commercialize ferrite, a magnetic material invented by Dr. Takeshi Takei that would become central to modern recording technology. By the 1950s and 1960s, TDK had evolved from a materials science firm into one of Japan’s most important manufacturers of magnetic tape, supplying both industrial and consumer markets.

With the rise of the Compact Cassette, TDK quickly established itself as a global benchmark for tape quality. Their formulations, especially the AD (Normal), SA (CrO₂), and MA (pure metal particle) series became reference points for consistency, durability, and performance. The SA and MA lines earned near‑legendary status among home recordists and audiophiles, helping define what “premium” cassette tape meant throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

TDK eventually sold its magnetic tape business to Imation in 2007. Today it is a major supplier worldwide of electronic components, sensors, and energy devices. Its strong focus on advanced materials and sectors such as EVs, renewables, and industrial automation keeps it positioned as a top-tier technology company.
