MEMOREX METAL IV - 1982 - US
Memorex’s 1982 Metal IV was their entry into the high‑end Type IV market, offering solid durability and respectable high‑frequency response. While it never matched the refinement of Japanese competitors like TDK MA or Maxell MX, it remains notable for bringing metal tape technology to a wider audience at a lower price. Today, collectors value it more for its rarity and iconic branding than for absolute performance, making it a distinctive piece of Memorex’s cassette legacy. Made in the USA.
Note 1: 90 Minutes: New one available but not as perfect as the one shown. Close though. One 1 available.
About Memorex:
Memorex was founded in 1961 in Silicon Valley, initially producing computer tapes and disk packs before expanding into disk drives and peripherals for IBM mainframes. By the 1970s, it had become one of the largest independent suppliers of disk drives and controllers worldwide.
In 1971, Memorex entered the consumer media market with audio cassettes, launching its iconic “Is it live, or is it Memorex?” campaign. The ads, featuring Ella Fitzgerald shattering a glass both live and on playback, cemented Memorex’s reputation and made its cassettes household staples through the 1970s and 1980s.
Acquired by Burroughs in 1982, and later absorbed into Unisys, Memorex’s operations were gradually dismantled by the late 1980s. Yet its cassette legacy remains central to its identity, remembered for combining mass‑market reach with one of the most famous advertising slogans in audio history.
