Sony JHF - 1978 - JP
Sony JHF is an early high‑bias (CrO₂) cassette engineered with ultrafine magnetic particles and a uniaxial‑anisotropy coating for improved efficiency and high‑frequency stability. Designed to deliver wide dynamic range with reduced print‑through, it offers clean, reliable performance typical of Sony’s first‑generation Type II formulations. Although positioned below later UX and UX‑S models, JHF represents Sony’s foundational approach to CrO₂ tape technology and remains a solid example of their early high‑bias development. Made in Japan.
Note 1: 90 Minutes: Wrapper has an odd rectangular cut-out on the reverse side of the case. It was scored-out with an exacto-knife for an unknown purpose. The rest of the wrapper is moderately to heavily scuffed. The tape repair was done by previous holder of this cassette. The plastic case will have the markings of this strange cut-out. See pictures. These tapes were known for clean, stable formulations and consistently high build quality, earning Sony a reputation amongst the best in the upper tier of global tape production.
As the cassette era wound down, Sony gradually exited its in-house tape manufacturing and shifted its focus toward electronics, imaging sensors, gaming, and content creation. Unlike some of it's competitors, Sony did not sell or transfer its tape-manufacturing operations; the company simply wound them down as the cassette era ended. Yet its cassette legacy, from everyday HF to the premium Metal ES, remains highly regarded.
