Late‑era Type I tapes like Sony HF, TDK D, Maxell UR, Fuji DR, and BASF FE still sell for $2.50–$4, yet their quality easily matches or exceeds today’s new Type I offerings. Modern manufacturers face higher costs, smaller runs, and limited sourcing, so their prices naturally land around $7 for a C60. I fully support the companies keeping tape alive, but they’re competing with enormous global inventories of excellent vintage Type I stock that never ran out. As interest slowly returns through products like the BB‑777, I hope the industry strengthens, because we need both the heritage tapes and the people still making tape today.

Yet its cassette legacy, from the everyday HF to the premium Metal ES, remains highly regarded.
