REALISTIC SUPERTAPE Gold+ - 1992 - US

Realistic Supertape Gold Plus was manufactured by SKC and distributed in Canada by Intertan Ltd. While wrapper evidence suggests earlier production, its absence from Radio Shack catalogues until later and the company’s slower market response make 1992 the most accurate attribution. This transitional premium ferric reflects Radio Shack’s affordable but behind‑the‑curve strategy, offering solid performance at a time when major brands were already moving ahead.

Notes: This SKC‑made super ferric has a smooth, shiny “milk‑chocolate” brown tape pancake, reflecting solid manufacturing quality. The shells are sturdy and well‑built, though the labels and J‑cards remain plain and uninspired.
Conclusion: A reliable, good‑quality tape for everyday recording, but not on par with premium models like Fuji FR‑I‑S, Maxell XL‑I‑S, TDK AR‑X, or Sony HF‑ES. Its advantage lies in affordability compared to those higher‑end choices

ABOUT RADIO SHACK / Realistic / Tandy and Intertan Corp:

Radio Shack was founded in 1921 by Theodore and Milton Deutschmann to supply amateur radio equipment. In 1963, Charles Tandy acquired the struggling company, merging it into Tandy Corporation, which had begun as a leather goods business in Fort Worth, Texas. Under Tandy’s leadership, Radio Shack grew into one of the largest consumer electronics retailers worldwide.
The Realistic brand, introduced in 1954, was Radio Shack’s private label for hi‑fi and audio products. It offered receivers, speakers, tape decks, and later CB radios and accessories. Realistic became a household name for affordable electronics, often a step behind premium competitors but widely accessible. In Canada, distribution was managed by Intertan Ltd., Barrie, ON.
By the 1990s, Tandy phased out Realistic, replacing it with Optimus and eventually re-branding under Radio Shack itself. Despite its decline, Realistic remains fondly remembered for its broad HiFi lineup and cassette products, including Supertape blanks and SCT‑series decks.

HiFi & Cassette Note: Realistic’s cassette decks (SCT series) and blank tapes like Supertape were staples of Radio Shack’s affordable HiFi range, offering consumers reliable recording gear at lower cost than major Japanese brands.
